Prince sets extensive arena tour, says he'll retire many well-known hits
Prince , in celebration of his impending induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, is set to embark on his first coast-to-coast tour of the U.S. in six years.
According to a press release, the concerts will mark the last time that the R&B star will perform some of his most well known hits. In a Tuesday (2/24) press conference, he said he plans to stop performing the songs so that he can have time to play different material.
The outing is so far set to visit U.S. arenas from late March through mid-June; confirmed shows appear in the itinerary below. Dates and venues for planned shows in Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Houston, Las Vegas, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, New York City, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle and Portland, OR, are to be announced.
Prince will perform "in the round," with the stage set in the center of the arenas. Tickets for many shows will go on sale this weekend.
Backing Prince on the tour will be New Power Generation band members John Blackwell (drums), Greg Boyer (trombone), Candy Dulfer (saxophone), Chance Howard (trumpet), Renato Neto (piano and synthesizers), Maceo Parker (saxophone), RAD. (vocals and keyboards) and Rhonda Smith (bass).
A new Prince album titled "Musicology" should hit stores in the coming months. Prince has been previewing some new songs--including the title track--during recent club appearances.
Prince will join the ranks of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame during a March 16 ceremony in New York.
