Rod Stewart adds summer leg to North American tour

The current leg of Rod Stewart 's North American tour wraps up late next month, but the veteran singer will make another swing across the continent this summer.

Stewart is currently scheduled to launch the summer outing on July 1, and dates so far stretch into mid-August. Tickets to a number of dates are on sale now, and members of Stewart's official fan club have access to online pre-sales, many of which begin on Tuesday (3/2). Details are posted at the fan-club's website.

Stewart is backing his latest album, "The Great American Songbook: Volume II," which surfaced last October. The set, which is Stewart's second collection of pop standards, features his renditions of "I'm in the Mood for Love," "Smile," "As Time Goes By," "I Only Have Eyes for You," "Someone to Watch Over Me," "Til' There was You" and "Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered," a duet with Cher.

"Volume II" is the follow-up to 2002's "It Had To Be You ... The Great American Songbook," which sold more than 4 million copies worldwide, according to Stewart's camp.

In addition to material from his "Great American Songbook" releases, Stewart's set list during the tour will feature songs from throughout his lengthy career, according to organizers; he is expected to perform hits such as Maggie May," "Tonight's the Night," "You're In My Heart," "Forever Young," "Downtown Train," "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy" and "Have I Told You Lately."

The tour is Stewart's first since 2001, and is his second outing since undergoing thyroid surgery in 2000. The surgery, which took place after doctors detected cancer, left Stewart unable to sing for several months.
