Harrison Leaves Hospital, Suspect Faces Attempted Murder Charge

Update: George Harrison was discharged from a hospital near London on Saturday night (1/1) so that he could continue his recovery from a stab wound at home, according to BBC News. Meanwhile, the man who allegedly broke into Harrison's mansion on Thursday night and stabbed him has been charged with attempted murder and is undergoing psychiatric evaluation in England.

''George is very, very tired and is spending his time resting and recuperating,'' Harrison's spokesman told Reuters. ''We do not foresee him leaving home for a long while yet.''

Harrison suffered a minor collapse of his right lung from an inch-deep stab wound, and also suffered some slash wounds during the pre-dawn struggle with a man who broke into his 120-room home, according to British press accounts. The 56-year-old ex-Beatle was reportedly concerned that injuries to his thumb and fingers would affect his guitar playing, but doctors assured him that the slashes weren't serious and they expect Harrison to make a full recovery within a few weeks.

Harrison's wife, Olivia, who reportedly knocked out the intruder during the struggle by hitting him over the head with a table lamp, was treated for minor head injuries on Thursday morning, but didn't require further hospitalization.

The alleged attacker, 33-year-old Liverpool resident Michael Abram, was charged with two counts of attempted murder on Friday (12/31), and remains detained at a psychiatric unit. According to The Times of London, Abram, who reportedly has a history of mental health problems, is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 11.

In related news, a 27-year-old British woman was arrested last week inside Harrison's Hawaii estate, reportedly prompting him to scrap plans to convalesce there. Police told the BBC that the woman, Cristin Keleher, claimed she cooked a frozen pizza, drank a root beer, did her laundry, and placed a long-distance call to her mother in Great Britain while inside the home.

According to The Times, police said the woman broke into the home on Dec. 24, and may have thought the ex-Beatle was going to spend the Christmas holiday in Hawaii. In a hearing last week, prosecutors reportedly said Keleher is dangerous, and might have attacked Harrison had she encountered him. Keleher remains jailed in Hawaii on a felony burglary charge.
