Bob Marley's sons spearhead first Roots Rock Reggae Festival tour
The brothers launch the run in Portsmouth, VA, on Aug. 7, and work their way across country before wrapping up in Berkeley, CA, on Aug. 29.
Common , Toots and Maytals, Slightly Stoopid and Looner hold down the tour's opening slots. Additional special guests may appear on select dates, according to organizers.
According to a press release, the festival "takes its cue from Bob Marley, who through his inspired melodies, lyrics and soul, brought reggae music to a world-wide audience." Musical acts will encompass "a dynamic mix of reggae, hip-hop, ska, blues, alt/country, electronic and soul music."
Ziggy Marley , Bob's eldest son, has been singing, writing and producing with the Melody Makers--a group that also features siblings Stephen, Sharon and Cedella--since the age of 10. Last year, he released his solo debut, "Dragonfly."
This fall, Stephen Marley--who has sung, deejayed, written and produced for the Melody Makers--releases a solo album on Motown Records.
Julian Marley --a self-taught musician who plays bass, drums and keyboards--issued his latest album, "Time & Place," last November.
Youngest brother Damian "Junior Gong" Marley issued a solo album titled "Halfway Tree" on Sept. 11, 2001. The set won a Grammy for Best Reggae Album.
