Paul Oakenfold gets crowds moving during summer tour
DJ Paul Oakenfold touches down in North America this summer for a swing on the club circuit.
The run kicks off in Seattle on June 24, and dates are set throughout the U.S. and Canada until late July; also on tap is a Sept. 4 performance at the National Orange Show in San Bernardino.
Oakenfold's most-recent collection of original material is 2002's "Bunkka," which features guest vocals from Perry Farrell, Ice Cube, Grant Lee Philips, Nelly Furtado, Tricky and others.
Though best known as a DJ, Oakenfold's resume also includes numerous production and remixing credits, and a turn as an A&R rep for Champion Records, the label to which he signed then-unknowns Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, and Salt-N-Pepa.
In the late '80s and early '90s, Oakenfold and partner Steve Osborne produced works by Happy Mondays, including the group's most successful album, 1990's "Pills 'n' Thrills 'n' Bellyaches." The duo went on to remix UK bands such as New Order, The Cure and Massive Attack, and were nominated by the BPI--the British equivalent of the American Grammy Awards--as Best Producers in 1990.
Oakenfold has also worked extensively with U2, beginning with his remixes of "Even Better Than the Real Thing" and "Mysterious Ways," two cuts from the group's 1991 album, "Achtung Baby." He also served as a DJ on the group's "ZOO TV" tour and, most recently, remixed "Beautiful Day," which hit No. 1 on the American dance charts, according to Oakenfold's website.
Other artists whose work Oakenfold has remixed include Arrested Development, Snoop Doggy Dogg and Madonna.
