Ani DiFranco heads up tour to get out vote
Ani DiFranco , in an effort to get young Americans into the voting booths during this year's presidential election, has booked a fall outing dubbed the Vote Dammit Tour.
The singer/songwriter has booked the run into venues located in so-called "swing states," where the election results are expected to be closely split between President George W. Bush and his Democratic opponent, Sen. John F. Kerry.
The jaunt kicks off in Pittsburgh on Sept. 10, and is scheduled to run through early October. Details are shown below.
DiFranco is mounting the run in conjunction with the Feminist Majority Foundation's Get Out Her Vote campaign, which focuses on college-age women. Together, DiFranco and the group plan to team with local organizations at each stop along the tour in an effort to encourage audience members to register and vote. A portion of the proceeds from each ticket sold will be donated to these local organizations, according to a press release.
Comedian Margaret Cho is scheduled to appear at DiFranco's performances in Minneapolis and Madison, WI, and may turn up at some additional shows. DiFranco will also share the stage with various activists and political satirists.
Before launching the Vote Dammit Tour, DiFranco is scheduled to play a series of July and August headlining dates and festival concerts as she continues to support her latest album, "Educated Guess," which surfaced in January. A handful of October and November shows are also set, including a two-night stand at New York City's Beacon Theatre.
DiFranco's Righteous Babe record label recently began selling a live CD that she recorded during a performance in Atlanta last October. The disc is only available through the label's website.
