With six nominations, rapper Jay-Z [ tickets ]'s clip for his single "99 Problems" leads the list of nominees for the 2004 MTV Video Music Awards, which will be handed out on Aug. 29 at Miami's American Airlines Arena.

Close behind with five nominations each are Beyonce [ tickets ], No Doubt, OutKast and Usher.

OutKast picked up five nominations for its "Hey Ya" video, while No Doubt got its nods for "It's My Life." Four of Usher's nominations were for "Yeah" (featuring Lil' Jon & Ludacris), and one was for "Burn." Beyonce [ tickets ] was nominated four times for her music video "Naughty Girl," and once for "Me, Myself and I."

The winners in most categories will be determined by a group of about 500 people, representing a mix of viewers and music industry professionals, according to a press release. Winners in the Viewer's Choice and MTV2 Award categories will be determined via online votes at MTV's website.

Among the artists scheduled to perform at the awards ceremony--which MTV will air live --are Usher, Kanye West and Jessica Simpson. Hoobastank, Yellowcard and Jet are set to perform a medley; other acts will be announced.
