Briefly: R.E.M., 'Now 16,' Matthew Sweet, festival seating
R.E.M. will issue a new album, dubbed "Around the Sun," on Oct. 5 in the U.S., and Oct. 4 internationally.
The set's first single is titled "Leaving New York," according to the band's official website.
The 20-song hits compilation "Now That's What I Cal Music! Vol. 6" was the top-selling album of the last week, with more than a half-million copies sold in the U.S. The set evicts Ashlee Simpson 's "Autobiography," sending it to No. 2 after one week in the No. 1 slot.
Taking Back Sunday 's sophomore effort, "Where You Want to Be," bows at No. 3, according to Billboard. Jimmy Buffett's "License to Chill" falls two places to No. 4 and Usher's confessions dips one place to No. 5.
Matthew Sweet plans to issue two new CDs in the U.S. this fall. The first to drop, on Sept. 7, will be "Living Things," which was written in one evening on a ranch in Santa Ynez, CA, where Sweet was working with Pete Droge and Shawn Mollins on The Thorns' 2003 release.
The second album, "Kimi," was released last year in Japan; it will be in U.S. stores on Oct. 19.
Cincinnati lawmakers have lifted the city's ban on general admission concert seating--also known as festival seating--a law that had been in effect since 11 fans were crushed to death before a 1979 concert by The Who at Riverfront Coliseum (now U.S. Bank Arena).
