Brian Wilson supports two new albums with fall tour
Brian Wilson backs his first new studio album in six years--as well as a forthcoming album that was originally due to surface 37 years ago--with a fall tour of the U.S.
The former Beach Boy and his 10-piece band launch the run at the end of September, and dates are confirmed through early November. Details appear below.
At each stop, Wilson and his band--augmented by a Swedish strings and brass octet--will perform all of the material contained on the forthcoming album "Smile." Originally planned as the follow-up to The Beach Boys ' landmark "Pet Sounds" album, the new set is scheduled for release on Sept. 28.
Wilson and lyricist Van Dyke Parks, who collaborated on the "Smile" sessions in 1966 and 1967, re-teamed last November after Wilson announced plans to complete "Smile" and perform it at a series of concerts in London. The pair, along with Darian Sahanaja of Wilson's touring band, began preparing music for the performance, which led Wilson and Parks to start working on new material as well.
The process led to the newly recorded version of "Smile," material from which made its public debut during a Feb. 20 concert at London's Royal Festival Hall. The original version of "Smile" was never released, but several tracks that were recorded for the album were issued on other Beach Boys albums.
Wilson's setlist during the upcoming tour will also include classic Beach Boys and Wilson numbers, as well as cuts from Wilson's June release, "Gettin' In Over My Head." The set--Wilson's first collection of all-new material since 1998's "Imagination"--features guest appearances from Eric Clapton, Elton John and Paul McCartney.
