Saliva, "Survival of the Sickest" (Island/Def Jam)

Saliva 's third album doesn't feature as much of the hip-hop influence of their debut, "Every Six Seconds," or the follow up, "Back Into Your System," but its radio-friendly, heavy rock does pack plenty of punch.

The Memphis-based quintet flies out of the gate with the crunchy "Rock & Roll Revolution," and doesn't let up through the first four tracks. "No Hard Feelings (No Regrets)" slows things down a bit, landing somewhere between Staind's drone and the "Spiderman" soundtrack hit "Hero," which saw vocalist Josey Scott hook up with Nickelback's Chad Kroeger.

Lyrically, there's much lamenting about the rock-and-roll life (they've sung a lot about being a "Superstar" on previous releases). The band is "destined to win or born to lose" on "Bait & Switch," and regales a tale "about the fame and the money" on "F**k All Y'all."

But the band throws a political blow on "2 Steps Back," chastising the Dixie Chicks in a verse: "I've seen the falling buildings from a TV hotel bed/I've seen mama's babies risk their lives for a waving flag/I heard the Dixie Chickens run their mouths in a foreign land/And then try to take back everything they never said."

That might not be enough to attract Toby Keith patriots, and the album might not floor the metal masses, but it'll sound good blaring out of your car stereo.
