liveDaily Interview: Incubus drummer Jose Pasillas
Incubus drummer Jose Pasillas says the controversial video for the rock band's song "Megalomaniac"--which features look-alikes of flying political figures including Adolf Hitler and George W. Bush--was misunderstood.
"There's a lot of images," Pasillas said. "Obviously people think, 'Oh, there's an anti-Bush video.' That wasn't our intent. The person who looks like Bush in there is merely a coincidence. It's basically just a politician. That was our intent."
"Whatever anyone takes from it, it's fine. We're just trying to get people to think. I think it worked--and it was a beautiful video, too."
The first single from the band's latest album, "A Crow Left of the Murder," the "Megalomaniac" video is a flurry of images shot by Floria Sigismondi, a director whose credits also include Christina Aguilera's "Fighter" and Marilyn Manson's "The Beautiful People."
Pasillas talked with liveDaily.com about Incubus' democratic songwriting process, its decade-long career, and recording without friends and family around.
liveDaily: Tell me about the songwriting process for "A Crow Left of the Murder." Did you record it any differently than your previous albums?
Jose Pasillas: We kind of took the same approach. We rented a small house [in California] up in the hills, threw our equipment in there and just sort of created a cool environment to just be creative. [That was better than] any sort of studio that has no windows and a rehearsal space. We figured we could make our own rehearsal space, and make the environment as conducive to creativity as possible. It had beautiful views of the mountains and the ocean.
Where did you record the album?
We wrote the record and we went to Atlanta to record the record. We were down there for a month. It was the first time we took ourselves out of our home environment. It was nice because it really secluded us, kept us focused. We did it in four weeks, so we really just went to it and got it done. It definitely helps when all you're doing is going to the studio and coming back. When you're home, you have distractions, friends. [But] I enjoy recording at home as well. We have everything we need to record. Our team is completely mobile. It doesn't really matter where we record. We could record on a ship if we wanted to.
Describe the songwriting process with Incubus. Does one person write most of the lyrics and music?
Everyone plays their respective instruments. Brandon [Boyd, lead singer] writes all the lyrics. I play the drums, obviously. Everyone sort of brings their ideas to the table and we just sort of jam them out--and obviously take suggestions from everybody else. It's a collective effort. [The opposite] could work for some people. but that's not really how we function. I like the way we function. It's been 13 years, so we're kind of set in our ways as well.
It's hard to believe that Incubus has been around for 13 years.
It's been over one-third of my life, playing with my friends, watching everyone grow, getting better at their instruments, and growing as people. It's been cool. It's been fun. It's been a great experience for all of us. We still enjoy it to this day. Hopefully we'll do it for double the amount of time. If we didn't enjoy it, we wouldn't be doing it.
