Interpol hits the clubs behind sophomore album
After spending its summer aboard The Cure's recently concluded Curiosa tour, New York alt-rock quartet Interpol is hammering out plans to headline its own club tour.
The outing will support the group's second album, "Antics," which was recorded last winter and is due in stores on Sept. 28. Interpol's debut set, "Turn on the Bright Lights," was issued in 2002.
Like their first album, "Antics" was recorded at producer Peter Katis' Tarquin Studios in Bridgeport, CT. The "Antics" sessions took place after Interpol spent two years on the road behind "Turn on the Bright Lights."
"On the road, [drummer Sam Fogarino] and I would constantly try to outdo each other," bassist Carlos D. said in a statement. "But we still had to 'obey' the old songs. We knew, with the new songs, we could push everything up a notch."
Added singer Paul Banks: "We learned how far our songs could go, and shot for a higher degree in our songwriting."
Interpol formed in 1998, but its current lineup has been in place since 2000. The group scored a big break when its sound, which owes much to post-punkers Joy Division, caught the ear of BBC Radio host John Peel, who featured the group on his program in 2001. As a result of that early exposure, the band remains a popular draw throughout much of Europe.
Indie-rock trio On! Air! Library! --featuring twin sisters Claudia and Alley Deheza, and Phillip Wann--will support on all dates, along with another act to be announced, according to Interpol's official website.
