CD Review: Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains, "The Big Eyeball In The Sky" (Prawn Song)

There's only one thing missing from Bernie Worrell's hallowed opening organ strains on "Eyeball"'s lead-off track " Buckethead ," and that's a deep voice bellowing, "Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today ..." Such is the righteousness of this disc.

This is so dementedly funky ("Thai Noodles," "Hip Shot From The Slab"), salaciously rocking ("Buckethead") and breathtakingly strange (everything else), it defies any and all categorization. But, then, with a quartet like this, what would you expect? In addition to Parliament's Worrell, the lineup features the quirky vocals and slapping bass of Primus's Les Claypool , the guitar man-myth known as Buckethead (ex-Guns N' Roses), and drummer Brian "Brain" Mantia (Guns N' Roses, Primus, Tom Waits).

Lyrically, the album ranges from the absurd "Buckethead" ("with his face as pale as pancakes and his posture in rebellion with his height"), to the pointed satire of the title track: "Now me I like my media / I like it nice and thick / Throwing options at the walls / To see which ones will stick / But to formulate opinions / From what I see is a joke / Because American TV's owned by Pepsi / And by Coke."

It won't have Jessica Simpson shaking in her Pradas, but it will give fans of forward-thinking outfits like Primus and Phish, and funkers like Parliament, something to chew on.
