Violence mars Vibe Music Awards

November 16, 2004 03:29 PM
The Vibe Music Awards--an event meant to honor achievement in urban music--were interrupted Monday night (11/15) when a man apparently punched rap impresario Dr. Dre in the face.

According to a Los Angeles Times report, an unknown man walked up to Dr. Dre's table--where Dre was waiting to accept the Vibe Legend Award--and punched the rapper. Dre's bodyguards then swarmed the man. Video of the event shows several people involved in the melee near the stage.

A 26-year-old man reportedly was stabbed at some point during the incident. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he reportedly was in stable condition.

The show was held up as police restored order at the event, which took place before a crowd of about 1,000 at the hangar at Southern California's Santa Monica Airport. There were no immediate arrests.

The ceremony resumed a short time later, at which time Vibe founder Quincy Jones and rapper Snoop Dogg presented the award to Dre without further incident.

"We are deeply saddened by the incident that occurred last night," Vibe president Kenard Gibbs said in a statement. "It is unfortunate that an event so many people worked very hard to create has been tainted by the actions of a few individuals. The Vibe Awards and Vibe magazine represent the best of urban culture and they will continue to do so. It is a testament to the true vision of the Vibe Awards that the magnificent talent and staff continued on to create a fantastic show."

The Vibe awards ceremony was taped to air Tuesday night (11/16) on UPN. The network plans to broadcast the show as scheduled. E! Online reported that the incident will be edited from the broadcast.
