Kanye West, Alicia Keys, Usher lead Grammy nominations
Rapper/producer Kanye West picked up 10 Grammy nominations to best the rest of the pack for the 47th Annual Grammy Awards , which will be handed out in Los Angeles on Feb. 13. Alicia Keys and Usher each grabbed eight nominations.
Other top nominees included the late Ray Charles with seven, Green Day with six, and Norah Jones, Loretta Lynn, Prince and engineer Al Schmitt with five apiece.
"This year's nominees truly reflect a trend of music makers participating in multiple aspects of the creative process, while also often collaborating with a diverse slate of other artists in various genres," said Recording Academy President Neil Portnow. "And with new artists emerging in rock, country, pop, R&B and rap, as well as in many other fields, we are pleased to see the robust health and creativity of all genres of music."
Album of the Year nominees include "Genius Loves Company," featuring Charles duetting with various artists; Green Day's "American Idiot"; Keys' "The Diary of Alicia Keys"; Usher's "Confessions"; and West's "The College Dropout."
Vying for Record of the Year are Black Eyed Peas' "Let's Get It Started," "Here We Go Again" by Charles with Norah Jones, Green Day's "American Idiot," Los Lonely Boys' "Heaven," and Usher's "Yeah!"
Nabbing nominations in the Best New Artist category are roots rockers Los Lonely Boys, pop/rock group Maroon 5, pop/soul singer Joss Stone, West and country artist Gretchen Wilson.
The top vote-getters in the rock field include Green Day, The Killers, Elvis Costello & The Imposters and Velvet Revolver. Usher, Keys, and Prince received multiple nominations in R&B categories, while Loretta Lynn led the country nominations with five.
Charles picked up three of his seven nominations in pop categories, and half of West's 10 nominations are in the rap field.
Ballots for the next round of voting will be mailed to the voting members of the Recording Academy on Dec. 15. They'll be returned to the accounting firm of Deloitte by Jan. 12, when they will be tabulated and the results kept secret until the telecast, which will air live from Staples Center on CBS-TV.
