Tesla unplugs for 'Five Man Acoustical Jam 2005' tour

Tesla sets out on an acoustic tour this winter that marks the 15th anniversary of its 1990 unplugged set, "Five Man Acoustical Jam."

Dubbed the "Five Man Acoustical Jam 2005" tour, the outing is currently scheduled to kick off in Vermont on Feb. 20, and a handful of subsequent shows are set throughout the Northeast. Details are shown below.

Fans will have a chance to get up-close and personal with the band via radio-station contests in each market where the tour touches down; a "handful" of winners in each city will get to sit on the stage for the entire show, and one winner in each city will perform a song with the band, according to a press release. In select cities, the fan chosen to perform with the group will also receive a Gibson electric guitar.

Hopefuls should note that contestants seeking to perform with the band will need to have "at least basic vocal and/or instrumental skills," as determined by contest organizers.

The group is inviting fans to help select the set list for the tour; details are posted at its website.

Released in 1990, "Five Man Acoustical Jam" spawned the hit "Signs," a cover of a 1971 song originally recorded by the Five Man Electrical Band. The cover version's success helped "Five Man Acoustical Jam" sell more than a million copies; ironically, Tesla's record company at the time had originally balked at the idea of releasing the set, as unplugged albums weren't yet in vogue.

In addition to marking the 15th anniversary of "Five Man Acoustical Jam," the tour supports Tesla's first new studio set in more than a decade, "Into the Now." Released in March of 2004, the album debuted at No. 31 on The Billboard 200 chart, and at No. 4 on Billboard's Top Internet Albums chart.
