Billy Idol returns with new album and tour
Veteran rocker Billy Idol is poised to release his first new studio album in more than a decade, and will back the set with U.S. tour that kicks off in March.
Titled "Devil's Playground," the new set is scheduled to hit stores on March 22. "Scream," its first single, is currently available exclusively via Apple's iTunes Music Store.
"Devil's Playground" is Idol's first original collection since 1993's "Cyberpunk." The singer explained the hiatus in a recent press release.
"In 1995, I ran into a brick wall. I had no band anymore, and the music business was getting quite soulless. It seemed like the big record companies were mostly interested in eating each other and promoting music as product. They didn't really believe in rock & roll anymore. How was someone like me going to fit into that? If I had continued taking their money to make records, I would have ended up owing them so much money that I never could have made ['Devil's Playground']. They wanted my soul in hock, and I refused to fall into their trap. I just stopped putting out records when I knew they would turn out sh---y, and I waited until I found a company [Sanctuary Records] that really wanted a Billy Idol record."
Shortly before "Devil's Playground" lands in stores, Idol and his band--longtime guitarist Steve Stevens, drummer Brian Tichy, bassist Stephen McGrath and keyboardist Derek Sheridan--launch a U.S. tour. So far, six dates are confirmed, with more to be added. Ticket on-sale dates for five shows are shown in the itinerary below.
Idol--who broke through with the punk-rock group Generation X--rose to stardom during the '80s thanks to hits such as "White Wedding," "Rebel Yell," "Dancing with Myself" and "Cradle of Love," among others.
