McLachlan, Wheeler Demand Removal Of Songs From Columbine Tape
Sarah McLachlan and folk singer Cheryl Wheeler are demanding the removal of their songs from a video compilation of footage from the Columbine High School massacre. The footage was recorded by Colorado's Jefferson County authorities on the day that two students of the Littleton, Colo., high school killed 13 people inside the building.
In the videotape, McLachlan's song ''I Will Remember You'' is background music for scenes that show, among other items, pools of blood in the school's library.
''Neither Sarah McLachlan nor Arista Records were ever approached for the usage of her music or image within the video being released,'' the label said in a statement before the tape was released on Wednesday (4/27). ''In fact, we are demanding that her song be removed from this exploitative videotape.''
That section of the tape was put together by a Littleton firefighter on his own time for a training film. According to Reuters, the video was used at training sessions for emergency medical technicians in 82 presentations in the U.S. and Canada.
During another portion of the tape, Wheeler's anti-gun song ''If It Were Up To Me'' play over footage. Her publishing company has reportedly written a letter demanding that the song be removed from the video.
Jefferson County began selling copies of the tape to the public for $25 each on Wednesday (4/26), a day after a judge ruled that the footage must be released under Colorado's Open Records Act. According to the Washington Post, county authorities have not said how the revenue from the tape sales will be used.
