Coldplay announces surprise show as album details surface

Hours after revealing details about its forthcoming album, U.K. sensation Coldplay announced plans to play a surprise Friday night (3/11) club show in California.

The group, which is gearing up for the release of "X&Y"--its follow-up to 2002's "A Rush of Blood to the Head"--is scheduled to hit the stage at The Troubadour in West Hollywood sometime after 7 p.m., according to the venue. Tickets for the show are priced at $10 and will be available only at the Troubadour's box office beginning at 5 p.m.; more information is available at the venue's website.

Those lucky enough to attend will likely hear the band perform material from "Y&T," which Capitol Records plans to release June 7. "Speed of Sound," the album's first single, is due to begin airing on radio April 18, according to the label.

The group recorded and co-produced the album in the U.K. over the past year with help from co-producers Danton Supple (Morrissey, Elbow) and Ken Nelson (Badly Drawn Boy, Kings of Convenience).

"We wanted to try new things out, to move our sound along, but the focus remains on the songs, and [singer] Chris [Martin]'s voice is sounding amazing," guitarist Jonny Buckland said in a statement.

Following the album's release, Coldplay plans to mount an extensive world tour; dates are confirmed for a European leg that kicks off in June (details are posted at the band's website), and the band is hammering out plans for a 40-city North American tour that will kick off in late July and run through late September, according to a press release.
