John Butler Trio mounts tour behind debut U.S. album

Australia's John Butler Trio --a chart-topping act in its home country--aims to win over U.S. audiences during a spring trek that includes a stint opening for former Phish frontman Trey Anastasio.

The group kicks things off with an April 29 performance at the annual New Orleans Jazzfest; a subsequent mix of headlining club shows, festival appearances and dates with Anastasio complete an itinerary that stretches into mid-June. Details are shown below.

Band namesake/singer/guitarist Butler--along with drummer Michael Barker and upright bassist Shannon Birchall--are backing their latest album, "Sunrise Over Sea." Released in the U.S. earlier this month, the set debuted at No. 1 in Australia last year, and earned Butler the Best Male Artist, Best Indie Release and Best Blues & Roots Album trophies at that country's annual ARIA Awards.

The album's No. 1 debut marked the highest Australian chart position ever achieved by an independently released artist, according to a press release.

"Sunrise Over Sea," which Butler released in the U.S. on Lava Records, debuted last week at No. 21 on Billboard's Top Heatseekers chart.

On Tuesday (3/29), John Butler Trio is scheduled to perform on "The Late Show with David Letterman."
