CD Review: Mudvayne, "Lost and Found" (Epic)

With their new album, the members of Mudvayne have abandoned their signature masks--and one set of names (i.e., vocalist Kud became Chüd, and now goes by his normal name, Chad Gray)--in an attempt to draw more attention to their music.

However, the music--from 2000's debut "L.D. 50" to 2001's "The Beginning of All Things To End" through the new "Lost and Found"--doesn't really show much evolution. For fans of throat-ripping, yet very dynamic metal, what Mudvayne dishes out is, no doubt, more than enough. The leadoff tracks "FD" and "Pushing Through" are appropriately punishing, while "All That You Are" mixes a Korn bass sound with haunting guitar echoes that recall STP's DeLeo brothers.

What's different are the lyrics, which have shifted from an apocalyptic howl to a more personal, introverted tone. Gray sings, "I feel it on the inside, twisting and contorting," on "Forget To Remember," and subsequent songs like "TV Radio" and "Rain, Sun, Gone" deal more succinctly with apathy and loss.

Maybe with the masks and pseudonyms stripped away, the members of Mudvayne are a bit more comfortable with themselves. Whatever the circumstances, "Lost and Found" is anything but ordinary.
