Cypress Hill Fans Prove Peaceful At Utah Concert
Cypress Hill played a concert opposed by venue officials without serious incident in the midst of St. George, UT's annual Spring Break weekend on Friday (4/2). According to local reports, a few fights among concertgoers broke out as the crowd left the campus' Burns Arena, but they were quickly quelled by police patrolling the area.
The concert, which took place on the campus of the state-run Dixie College, was cancelled two weeks ago over college concerns that both the group's fans and song content could create problems during the notoriously busy weekend. The show's promoter promptly sued the college on contractual and free speech grounds to win reinstatement of the concert booking, and college officials reversed their ruling days later, allowing the concert to go on.
The college had said that the problem was a lack of security, since local police officers generally assist in security for college concerts. The show happened to be booked on the city's Spring Break weekend, making police unavailable for internal security. The show's promoter claimed that he was providing all the necessary security staff, noting that this was factored into his own security budget and should never have been an issue.
In the course of the drama, Cypress Hill faced off against allegations that their fans could generate problems, citing via their official web site evidence that their concerts play out peacefully, despite the expression of some anti-police sentiments in their material.
While local police took no active role in singling out the group for their material, college officials continued to voice their opposition to the booking while announcing their decision to reinstate the show in the face of First Amendement litigation, saying, "Through this process we have learned that the performers and their music may be incongruent with prevailing community standards. Even then, it falls within the boundaries of established constitutional law."
