Audioslave to perform outdoor concert in Cuba
Rock supergroup Audioslave will share the stage with several Cuban artists during a Friday (5/6) concert performance at La Tribuna in Havana.
The concert--which the band's publicist claims will mark the first time that a U.S. rock band has performed an outdoor show in Cuba--will be free to the public. In the past, the venue has accommodated up to a million people, according to a press release.
In order to participate, Audioslave had to get authorization from the U.S. Treasury Department and the Instituto Cubano de la Musica to travel to Cuba for the performance.
"Kids are the same all over the world, and we are extremely proud and excited to bring rock 'n' roll to the youth of Cuba," said a statement issued by Audioslave. "It's all about the music, and free expression of music crosses all barriers. This is a rare opportunity, and we are grateful and honored to have the support of both countries."
The band, which is currently on the road in advance of the May 24 release of its sophomore album, "Out of Exile," is scheduled to be in Cuba Wednesday through Saturday (5/4-7) to meet with Cuban youth and musical artists.
Though there are exceptions related to the sale of food and medicine--as well as some not-for-profit cultural exchanges--U.S. law prohibits most commerce with Cuba, and tightly restricts Americans' ability to travel to the island nation.
Audioslave features former Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell, along with former Rage Against the Machine members Tom Morello (guitar), Brad Wilk (drums) and Tim Commerford (bass).
