Celine Dion's Las Vegas show raises $1 million tsunami victims
The Mother's Day (5/8) performance of Celine Dion 's Las Vegas production, "A New Day ...," took in more than $1 million for victims of last year's devastating South Asian tsunami, according to event producer Concerts West.
The funds raised--which included proceeds from the show, sponsorship packages, a commemorative program book and collection boxes at the venue, and a silent auction preceding the show--were donated to UNICEF's Tsunami Recovery Fund, earmarked for relief and rebuilding efforts in the region hit by the tsunami. CNN talk show host and UNICEF Honorary Committee Member Larry King served as Master of Ceremonies for Sunday's show.
Dion debuted her Las Vegas show in March of 2003, and played about 150 nights during her inaugural year at The Colosseum, a venue built at Caesar's Palace specifically for the production.
In 2004, the show--which features a cast of 48 dancers and plays to a crowd of more than 4,000 fans each night it's live--marked its 1 millionth ticket sold.
"A New Day ...," which generally plays Wednesdays through Sundays, is set to run during select weeks through 2007. This year's schedule has been set through early September; tickets are currently on sale for shows through July.
