CD Review: Dierks Bentley, "Modern Day Drifter" (Capitol)

In "Lot of Leavin' Left to Do," the opening track from "Modern Day Drifter," Dierks Bentley warns a prospective lover not to "fall for me if you know what's good for you." That same advice applies for prospective listeners.

"Modern Day Drifter," the follow-up to Bentley's platinum-selling, self-titled debut, is one of the most generic-sounding country albums in recent memory. It's the type of cliché-ridden, gimmick-rich effort that fuels non-country fans' cynical view of the genre.

Bentley learns everything he needs to know about life and love in the "Cab of My Truck," sitting next to a bag of Red Man chewing tobacco and a Johnny Cash box set. He croons a love song to beer in "Domestic, Light and Cold," and then catches his lady on the dance floor with another cowboy in "So So Long."

The only redeeming thing about the album is that the great Alison Krauss adds background vocals on one song. The track is appropriately named "Good Things Happen." Unfortunately, good things don't happen nearly often enough on "Modern Day Drifter."
