Album Review: Black Eyed Peas, "Monkey Business" (A&M)

By now, the Black Eyed Peas ' four colorful members have whittled their formula down to simple addition: big beats, bouncy hooks and utterly silly subject matter. No surprise that they're more confident than ever on their fourth release, "Monkey Business."

You'll be hard pressed to find a catchier album this year; just one listen to "Monkey Business" makes it clear that the band's mega-hit, "Let's Get Retarded" (aka "Let's Get it Started") was no fluke.

Still, it's a shame the band's confidence sometimes results in some of the most inane music ever recorded. Just check Fergie's silly "My Humps," a goofy tune about her ass. And why redo Jack Johnson's "Gone," almost note for note?

The group does much better collaborating with James Brown on the soulful "They Don't Want Music." Elsewhere, Will.I.Am proves he still knows how to rhyme, and he puts it together on the standout "Like That."

Surely, no one expects BEP to break from a formula that has served them especially well over the last few years. They deliver Grade-A party music and don't worry about nothin' else. On "Monkey Business," the name says it all. And BEP once again cook up a platter packed with cool cuts and party flavor--even if that occasionally means appealing to the dumbest people at the party.
