Live Review: Foo Fighters in Roswell, NM

There will be no talk of a cover up this time. Visitors from other worlds definitely did descend from the sky and land in Roswell, NM, on Saturday (6/18).

But these visitors weren't from Mars. The ones wearing blue wristbands were from a place called Seattle, a planet that seems to trade mainly in caffeine products. Then there were visitors in orange wristbands from a spot named Minneapolis, obviously a very friendly planet, and ones in yellow from a location called New York City, which, for some strange reason, all seemed to hate the Boston Red Sox. The most bizarre visitors were wearing green wristbands and hailed from a far-off (far-out) world named Los Angeles--which, perhaps, is a mining colony for silicone.

They had all come by spacecraft--or what they were trying to pass off as private jets--to meet their mighty leader. His name is Dave Grohl.

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of his Foo Fighters , Grohl and his fellow rock-and-roll space travelers hosted 500 fans in what has to go down as one of the coolest birthday parties of all time. The event, which was put on by the kindly folks at RealNetworks, was actually held at the old Walker Air Force Base, home to the infamous alleged UFO cover up in 1947. The concert itself took place in the hangar that, perhaps, once housed the remains from a flying saucer crash.

It was a perfectly oddball setting for a band that clearly cherishes the notion of visitors from another planet. The group took its name from the term used by WWII pilots to describe mysterious unidentified glowing balls in the skies. ("Foo Fighters" was also the title of a popular comic strip of the WWII era.) The band even named its label after what is commonly referred to as the "Roswell Incident."

"This is a long overdue and historic moment for the band," Grohl said in a statement prior to arriving at the concert site. "Despite being in a band called Foo Fighters, having a label called Roswell Records, and being a total UFO nut, I have never been to Roswell, NM. So the fact that we finally get to go to Roswell and play a gig in the same hangar where they allegedly stored the remains of the 1947 UFO crash blows my mind."

He wasn't the only one. Fans were blown away when they learned that they been chosen for all-expense-paid one-day trips to see the Foo Fighters in Roswell. Robert Sones and Danny Marie, two members of the Pacific Northwest's hard-rocking Glow of a Thousand Suns, won their trip through a radio promotion on Seattle's KISW.

"You probably only get a chance like this once in a lifetime," Marie marveled.

Tiffany Hu and Jennifer Chun, two travelers from Los Angeles, won their trips through an Internet contest. Hu, who says she never wins anything, laughs that she almost deleted the email notifying her that she had been chosen for the trip.

"I thought I was getting spam mail," she says.

Thankfully, Hu opened the email and could enjoy the concert. And there was plenty to enjoy. The Fighters delivered an absolutely scorching 90-minute set of tracks from its recently released double-CD, "In Your Honor," as well as selections from its previous four albums.

Grohl, who was noticeably tickled to be performing in Roswell, tore into the tunes like a kid opening up presents on Christmas morning. He kicked on the thrusters and burned through such favorites as "Monkey Wrench" and "My Hero" before closing the show in triumphant fashion with "This is a Call."

Then the call was sounded for the travelers to go back to their crafts and embark on their return journeys home. On their way out of the hanger, these visitors received one last treat--souvenir bags stuffed with plenty of band goodies.

And, really, who would want to attempt space travel without special Foo Fighters socks?
