Album Review: CKY, "An Answer Can Be Found" (Island)
Though daredevil skateboarder Bam Margera gave CKY its big break by asking the band to provide the soundtracks to his videos in the early '90s, the West Chester, PA rockers--anchored by Bam's drummer brother Jess, who plays alongside guitarist/vocalists Deron Miller and Chad I. Ginsburg--are more than ready to stand on their own.
If you loved the viral guitar riff of "96 Quite Bitter Beings" (of "Jackass" fame), there is certainly no shortage of similar fare on "An Answer Can Be Found": "Suddenly Tragic," "Dressed in Decay" and the swaggering "All Power to Slaves" all boast a signature tone that has found its way onto a few other band's albums. We shall not name names.
There are, however, notable departures from the familiar alt-metal blows to the face. The classical guitar interlude "Behind The Screams" jumps out like Slipknot's "Vermilion," and the electric-guitar work evolves beyond the riffs to shredding solos (remember those?) on first track "Suddenly Tragic" and hard-hitting "Tripled Manic State."
Familiar enough for the already converted, but with plenty of twists and a dose of growth, "An Answer Can Be Found" should be enough to snare CKY some new followers.
