New Bob Dylan rarities collection due, tour continues
The seventh edition of Columbia Records' Bob Dylan "Bootleg Series" will also serve as the soundtrack to Martin Scorsese's upcoming film about the folk-rock legend.
Dubbed "No Direction Home: The Soundtrack," the album is due in stores Aug. 30. The two-disc, chronologically sequenced collection features 28 Dylan tracks, 26 of which are previously unreleased.
Recorded between 1959 and 1966, the album's tracks include rare private recordings, live concert, television and festival recordings, and 12 alternate takes of songs from Columbia recording sessions.
The CDs will be packaged with a 60-page color book housing liner notes by Andrew Loog Oldham. Al Kooper, who played organ and served as musical director on Dylan's "Highway 61 Revisited" and "Blonde on Blonde" albums, contributes liner notes about those recording sessions.
Meanwhile, the two-part Scorsese film "No Direction Home: Bob Dylan" will make its U.S. debut Sept. 26 and 27 on PBS's "American Masters Series."
The film is the first feature length biography ever produced on Dylan, who serves as its narrator. In addition to archival footage and photography, it features exclusive interviews with Joan Baez, photographer John Cohen of the New Lost City Ramblers, Allen Ginsberg, Tony Glover, Al Kooper, Bruce Langhorne, Paul Nelson, Suze Rotolo, Pete Seeger and Dave Van Ronk, among others.
Dylan recently completed a lengthy tour of Minor League ballparks with Willie Nelson, and he'll soon embark on a series of his own North American headlining dates.
