Daniel Lanois, Tortoise to join forces for fall trek
Daniel Lanois --best known for his sonic collaborations as producer and sometimes instrumentalist with Brian Eno, U2, Peter Gabriel and others--will team up with indie-pop experimentalists Tortoise this fall for a tour of 13 North American cities.
Set to kick off Oct. 6 in Boston, the two acts will wind their way through the continent playing medium-sized venues, finishing up Oct. 22 with an appearance at Los Angeles' Avalon club.
Though long lauded as a producer of other artists' material, Lanois has recorded several solo albums showcasing his own work as a composer and performer, including his just-released "Belladonna," an all-instrumental affair featuring contributions from pianist Brad Mehldau and drummer Brian Blade.
Tortoise 's most recent album, "It's All Around You," was released in 2004, and has garnered impressive critical notices. The five-piece ensemble has performed together in various forms since the early '90s and has released several albums in that time, gathering a small but growing following across the years. The group is slated to release a collaborative album with singer/songwriter Will Oldham (a.k.a. Bonnie "Prince" Billy, among other aliases) later this year.
In addition to playing their own sets of music on the forthcoming tour, Tortoise's members will also act as Lanois' backup band during his performances.
