Lynyrd Skynyrd axes more shows, singer faces surgery
Southern rockers Lynyrd Skynyrd have called off their touring plans for the next three months so that frontman Johnny Van Zant can undergo surgery for nagging throat problems.
According to a statement posted at the group's website, Van Zant continues to suffer from "acute and chronic inflammation of his vocal cord and development of a large vocal cord polyp." Removal of the polyp will require surgery, and "post-operative rehabilitation will prevent him from performing over the next three months," the statement reads.
Van Zant has been battling recurrent throat problems in recent months. In June, the group postponed some shows while he recovered from "a severe case of strep throat," according to a press release issued at the time.
Earlier this month, the group scrapped several shows to give Van Zant time to rest his voice due to "significant vocal cord inflammation and swelling," said an announcement issued by the band.
Van Zant's condition has forced Lynyrd Skynyrd to call off all of its shows through October, including a stint with The Allman Brothers Band . The Allmans will instead be the sole headliner on the dates that were to feature both acts, according to Lynyrd Skynyrd's statement.
