According to a press release, the special will seek to raise funds for The American Red Cross and similar organizations, and will promote volunteerism.
"In the face of a tragedy of this scope, we simply have to do everything in our power to offer support, comfort and hope to all the people directly impacted by the hurricane," MTV Networks exec Judy McGrath said in a statement. "Our goal is to join forces on every medium to get involved, to volunteer, to contribute in any way we can."
According to a press release, MTV Networks' "ongoing relief campaign" will open with live performances from locations in New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta and Nashville. In addition to Viacom's flagship music networks, the program will also air on MTV2, mtvU, VH1 Classic and broadband video networks MTV Overdrive and VSpot.
MTV News is producing a special on the hurricane relief efforts, which will also air on Sept. 10.
