Blues artist R. L. Burnside--who gained widespread notoriety in the 1990s by successfully combining raw blues with modern electronica, indie-rock and hip-hop-style production--died Thursday (9/1). He was 78.

Burnside, born Nov. 21, 1926, in Harmontown, MS, died at St. Francis Hospital in Memphis, TN, according to a statement from his label, Fat Possum Records.

Burnside's recording career began in 1968, but he didn't achieve fame outside of Mississippi until he recorded the crossover collaboration "A Ass Pocket of Whiskey" with the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. Music from his subsequent album, "Come On," was featured in several movies and television shows, including "The Sopranos."
