Music industry ratchets up hurricane relief efforts

Faith Hill and New Orleans native Aaron Neville have joined the roster of artists scheduled to perform during tonight's "A Concert for Hurricane Relief" event, which is one of a number of efforts by the music industry to assist those affected by Hurricane Katrina.

The one-hour "A Concert for Hurricane Relief" telethon is scheduled to air live, commercial-free, from New York City's Rockefeller Center at 8 p.m. ET on NBC, as well as on Sirius Satellite Radio's CNBC channel (101) and XM Satellite Radio's MSNBC and CNBC channels (130 and 127, respectively). West Coast viewers will see a tape-delayed version of the event, according to NBC. The network will also stream the program live at its website.

As previously reported, the telethon will also feature Tim McGraw, Harry Connick Jr. and Wynton Marsalis, as well as a number of celebrities, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Claire Danes, Mike Myers, Lindsay Lohan, Hilary Swank, Eli Manning, John Goodman, Eric LaSalle and others with ties to the Gulf Coast region. Matt Lauer will host the event, during which viewers will be encouraged to donate money via the Red Cross website or the donation hotline 1-800-HELP NOW (435-7669).

Meanwhile, cable channel BET has announced plans for a Sept. 9 telethon that will feature Stevie Wonder, Omarion, Common, David Banner, Jay-Z , Juvenile , Sean "Diddy" Combs, Master P and others. A Sept. 10 benefit will follow on sister cable-TV networks MTV, VH1 and CMT, the lineup for which so far includes Green Day, Ludacris, Gretchen Wilson, Usher, Alicia Keys, John Mellencamp, Dave Matthews Band, Rob Thomas, David Banner and Linkin Park's Chester Bennington.

The Grand Ole Opry and cable channel Great American Country (GAC) will pitch in with a Sept. 27 event dubbed "Country Reaches Out: An Opry Benefit for the American Red Cross," the roster for which so far includes Alan Jackson, Alison Krauss, Craig Morgan and Billy Currington.

Plans reportedly are also in the works for a telethon that will be simulcast by CBS, ABC, Fox, NBC, the WB and UPN. The networks banded together for a similar event, dubbed "America: A Tribute to Heroes," following the 9/11 terrorist attacks. That program drew 59 million viewers and raised more than $150 million in pledges to assist victims, according to CNN.

Aside from participating in the aforementioned telethons, a number of artists are also making their own individual contributions to assist with Hurricane Katrina relief efforts.

On Thursday (9/1), Dave Matthews Band announced plans for a Sept. 12 benefit concert at Colorado's Red Rocks Amphitheatre.

Celine Dion , Jay-Z and Sean "Diddy" Combs have each pledged $1 million to the American Red Cross, while Hilary Duff has pledged $200,000 to the Red Cross and $50,000 to USA Harvest, which is supplying food for shelters housing hurricane victims.

Mississippi natives 3 Doors Down have produced a public service announcement providing information on contacting various relief organizations. The clip will be available at the group's website.

New Orleans native Juvenile--a.k.a. Terius Gray--is spearheading a number of relief efforts, including an in-the-works "mega multi-media hip-hop event," according to a press release. The multi-platinum rapper's New Orleans home and all of his possessions were destroyed as a result of the hurricane, according to Atlantic Records.

"We as Americans were so responsive to the world in the face of the tsunami, and we have sent our troops and our money to Iraq and Afghanistan," Juvenile said in a statement. "So I am sure that we, as individuals and as a country, can apply to Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida the massive level of effort and giving which is surely demanded now. Please keep our city, its people, and our families in your prayers and donate whatever you can to the Red Cross."

Ticketmaster, liveDaily's parent company, has set up a webpage featuring information on how to contribute to the relief efforts; the page also includes information for those who purchased tickets to upcoming events in the Gulf Coast region.
