Ozzy Osbourne Tells Rock Hall Of Fame To Forget Black Sabbath

If frontman Ozzy Osbourne has his way, Black Sabbath won't be considered for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year. The pioneering British heavy metal band has been nominated for inclusion in the Hall for three straight years, but hasn't garnered enough support for induction.

''Just take our name off the list,'' Osbourne said in a statement issued Monday. ''Save the ink. Forget about us. The nomination is meaningless, because it's not voted on by the fans. It's voted on by the 'supposed' elite of the Industry and the Media, who've never bought an album or concert ticket in their lives, so their vote is totally irrelevant to me.

''Let's face it, Black Sabbath have never been media darlings. We're a people's band and that suits us just fine.''

So far, Hall officials haven't commented on Ozzy's statement. And since ballots have already been distributed to the Hall's voting body of about 1,000 music experts, it's unlikely that officials will take any action at all. To be inducted into the Hall, a performer must receive at least 50 percent of the vote, and even then, the Hall typically limits the number of inductees per year to seven or less.

Other artists under consideration this year for induction into the Hall are Lou Reed, Eric Clapton, James Taylor, Earth, Wind, & Fire, Bonnie Raitt, Aerosmith, Queen, Ritchie Valens, The Lovin' Spoonful, The Moonglows, The Flamingos, Solomon Burke, the O'Jays and Steely Dan.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation will announce the newest inductees in November. Though the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum is located in Cleveland, the induction ceremony will take place at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York in March .

Osbourne will front Black Sabbath during a short European tour in December. According to Osbourne's publicist, the band has played about 60 dates so far this year.
