The Frames, Josh Ritter trek through North America
The Frames--who are touring in support of their fifth studio album, this year's "Burn the Maps"--join Ritter following a Sept. 24 appearance at the Austin City Limits festival in Austin, TX. The co-headlining itinerary is included below.
Idaho native Ritter and The Frames' lead singer, Ireland's Glen Hansard, first met in the spring of 2002 at a Boston open-mic night. Hansard invited the folk singer to open a string of shows in Ireland, establishing a foundation for Ritter's success.
Ritter's popularity in Ireland grew with the single "Me & Jiggs," which hit the Irish Top 40 chart. Ritter continued to tour, playing several festivals worldwide, including the Cambridge Folk Festival, the V Festival and the 2002 Newport Folk Festival.
The Frames garnered acclaim in Ireland and toured Europe throughout the '90s. However, North American access was limited due to a couple of bungled label deals.
The band traveled to Chicago in 2000 to record its fourth album, "For the Birds," with engineer Steve Albini (The Pixies' "Surfer Rosa," Nirvana's "In Utero"). The group now has a deal with California-based label Anti, which is also home to Tom Waits, Nick Cave, Merle Haggard, Daniel Lanois and Marianne Faithfull.
Ritter spent late summer touring Australia in support of his third full-length release, 2003's "Hello Starling."
