Pat Benatar Boxed Set Offers Rarities, Live Tracks
Pat Benatar is ready to hit the world with her best shot -- a 24-bit, digitally remastered 3-CD, 53-song comprehensive compilation due Oct. 5 titled Synchronistic Wanderings: Recorded Anthology 1979-1999 (Chrysalis/Capitol).
Included are all 19 of her top 40 singles, most notably her two # 5 singles, ''Love Is A Battlefield'' and ''We Belong,'' her #9 single, ''Hit Me With Your Best Shot,'' and her #10 hit ''Invincible (theme from the Legend of Billie Jean).''
While the box set includes at least one song from each of her 11 non-compilation albums (only the live 8-15-80, released in 1998, is omitted), there are a few unreleased tracks included. For starters, there are live versions of John Cougar's (not yet Mellencamp) ''I Need A Lover'' performed at New York's Bottom Line during her first tour for her debut album, 1979's In the Heat of the Night, and ''Run Between the Raindrops,'' which was recorded live in Philadelphia in 1988.
From 1979-1989, Benatar received eight Grammy nominations for Best Rock Performance (Female), winning a then-unprecedented four consecutive years for the album Crimes of Passion (1980) and the singles ''Fire and Ice (1981), ''Shadows of the Night'' (1982) and ''Love Is A Battlefield'' (1983). Interestingly, the video for 1980's ''You Better Run'' was the second ever aired on MTV (the Buggles' ''Video Killed the Radio Star'' preceded it).
The set clocks in at 3 hours, 43 minutes. It duplicates 25 tracks plus the studio version of ''I Need a Lover'' from 1994's 2-CD, 32-track compilation All Fired Up: The Very Best of Pat Benatar.
Benatar is appearing on VH1's ''100 Greatest Women of Rock 'N' Roll,'' clocking in at #40. Now off the road after headlining small venues this summer, she will be performing New Year's Eve at the Las Vegas Hilton.
