Arcade Fire, Gorillaz, M.I.A. among top nominees for Woodie Awards
MTV's college network, mtvU, has announced the nominees for its second-annual Woodie Awards show and its first-ever accompanying live-music event.
Disregarding common award-show criteria such as sales figures, mtvU's Woodies attempt to honor music that is popular with college audiences. Nominees largely comprise buzz bands that have won over hearts, but not necessarily the charts. Winners will be announced during the award show and concert, which will be held on Nov. 2 at the Roseland Ballroom in New York. The taped-for-broadcast event will air Nov. 10 on mtvU.
Leading the pack of nominees is the quirky, New Wave-inspired Arcade Fire, which grabbed five nominations, including Woodie of the Year (Best Artist), Left Field Woodie (Most Original Artist) and Road Woodie (Best Tour). Arcade Fire is one of 39 emerging acts to garner nominations this year. Other top nominees include Gorillaz , M.I.A., Matisyahu and Death Cab For Cutie.
This will be the first year that the ceremony will feature a full line-up of performers and presenters, who will be announced in the upcoming weeks. The Woodie Awards debuted in 2004, with Modest Mouse taking home the trophy for Best Artist and Coheed & Cambria winning Best Album for "In Keeping Secrets Of Silent Earth: 3." Other winners included the Killers, Fallout Boy, N.E.R.D., Taking Back Sunday, Sum 41 and Incubus.
“College students are prophesying the future of music today," Stephen Friedman, general manager of mtvU, said in a press release. "With our first ever live Woodie Awards event, the music they live their lives to takes center stage, and the rest of the world gets to see what's about to break big."
To vote for the second-annual mtvU Woodie Awards, college students around the country are invited to visit mtvU.com before October 28th.
