Perry Farrell Signs With Virgin

Former Janes's Addiction and Porno for Pyros singer Perry Farrell has signed a contract with Virgin Records America to release his first solo album, "The Diamond Jubilee," in April or May of 2000.

Ten songs have been recorded for the release so far, which features electronica and dub elements mixed with contributions from guitarist Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine), bassist Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers and the Jane's Addiction Reunion Tour) and guitarist John Frusciante (Red Hot Chili Peppers). Mad Professor, a Guyana-born dub reggae artist who gained notoriety remixing Massive Attack and working with Lee ''Scratch'' Perry, is another collaborator. Farrell is supposed to finish the album this fall and mix it down next spring.

Farrell envisions the album as a song cycle based on the Hebraic idea of the jubilee, representing world peace. As stated in the Old Testament book of Leviticus, the jubilee was one year out of every fifty in which slaves were freed, lands were returned to their rightful owners and farming was forbidden. He has performed on behalf of the Jubilee 2000 peace organization at Woodstock '99 and a 1998 California commemoration for the 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Farrell's current musical direction is not really a radical shift, since he has spent the last year giving public and private performances as a turntablist and drum-machine artist. Like many major rock artists, such as David Bowie and Trent Reznor, he has used computerized dance music techniques once they became popular.

On Nov. 9, Farrell will release his final album for Warner Bros. Titled ''Rev,'' the LP contains unreleased Jane's Addiction and Porno for Pyros songs and a drum 'n' bass version of Led Zeppelin's ''Whole Lotta Love.''

As part of the Spitfire Tour, Farrell will speak Oct. 28 at the Wilshire Theater in Los Angeles, Nov. 1 at Shiley Theater at the University of San Diego, Nov. 10 at the Paramount Theater in Denver and Nov. 11 at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. The tour, which also includes Jello Biafra, Exene Cervenka and Krist Novoselic, is a travelling free-speech forum which promotes social activism.

Farrell will also play the Palace Theatre in Hollywood on Nov. 3.
