Pete Townshend Launches Commercial Website
Pete Townshend unveiled his official commercial website, www.eelpie.com, this week, and has made available two new releases: "Lifehouse Chronicles" and "Avatar." Townshend has also announced plans to perform the rock opera "Lifehouse" at Sadler's Wells Theatre in London on Feb. 25.
"The Lifehouse Chronicles" is a 6-CD box set that tracks the history of Townshend's long-dormant "Lifehouse" project from the original music of 1970 and 1971 (much of which turned up in one form or another on the album ''Who's Next'') to the first full realization of the project last year, when the radio play ''Lifehouse'' was broadcast on BBC Radio 3.
The set includes the radio play, two CD's of music originally written for "Lifehouse," and new music composed for the piece, according to www.eelpie.com.
The "Lifehouse" package originally was slated for release in December, but the date was pushed back. (It was previously announced that Best Buy stores would be the exclusive U.S. retailer to carry "Lifehouse." The company hasn't announced when the set will be on shelves.)
"Avatar" is a 4-CD box set that is limited to a first run of 2000 copies. The set includes three albums Townshend made with friends during the 1970s in tribute to Meher Baba, Townshend's spiritual mentor at the time. It also includes a CD-ROM that shows showing scenes from Meher Baba's life, with a soundtrack provided by Townshend.
The upcoming live performance of "Lifehouse" in London won't be a full theatrical production, according to a message Townshend posted on his official website.
"..This particular show is going be about the music, and mainly the demos for 'Lifehouse.' I am not trying to create a dramatic context for the show, nor tell the story in any way. But I hope the underlying themes, hopes and concerns of 'Lifehouse will come through."
Beginning on Feb. 8, a "cyberfilm diary" of rehearsals for the London performance will be posted daily, according to Townshend's message.
