Album Review: Gretchen Wilson, "All Jacked Up" (Epic)

Gretchen Wilson 's sophomore effort, "All Jacked Up," is a hoot from start to finish. It's a worthy successor to the multi-platinum debut "Here for the Party," and it will likely be another smash hit for the singer.

The self-proclaimed "Redneck Woman" gets the party going in uproarious fashion with the album's title track and continues to honky-tonk her way through countrified ballads and barroom bruisers. Wilson doesn't deliver a single weak moment on the album and, most impressively, she manages to hold her own with all-time country-great Merle Haggard on "Politically Uncorrect."

The album is incredibly well written and uncommonly funny, two elements that also made "Here for the Party" such a success. Wilson answers The Beach Boys, as well as takes on Paris Hilton, with her own track named "California Girls." "Ain't you glad we ain't all California Girls?" she sings. "Ain't you glad that there's still a few of us left that know how to rock your world (and who) ain't afraid to eat fried chicken and dirty dance to Merle." Why, yes, we are glad--especially if they are all as much sassy good fun as Gretchen Wilson.

Wilson continues on to champion tobacco chewers with "Skoal Ring" ("Don't need no diamond ring . . . The only thing I really need is a man with a Skoal ring") and marvel at her own success in "Not Bad for a Bartender."

The most impressive song on this thoroughly impressive album, however, is the hidden track, which finds the singer believably covering the Billie Holiday-staple "Good Morning Heartache." Combine that breathy version, which sounds like it could have come from a Norah Jones b-sides collection, with the rest of the cowboy treats found on "All Jacked Up" and you have an album that's so good it's downright scary.
