Patti Smith rides 'Horses' on the road
Punk-rock poet Patti Smith will celebrate the 30th anniversary of her landmark debut, "Horses," with a brief tour that begins in mid-November.
The influential singer/songwriter will perform with longtime band-member Lenny Kaye in a duo setting for three West Coast dates. Smith will then gather up her full band to open for U2 at New York's Madison Square Garden for two nights before winding up the short tour with a pair of gigs at BAM in New York.
The complete tour itinerary is listed below.
To further mark the anniversary of Smith's milestone debut, Arista/Columbia/Legacy Recordings will release "Horses/Horses," a two-disc special edition of the album, on Nov. 8.
The first disc in the set will feature the original album along with a bonus track, Smith's interpretation of The Who's classic "My Generation." Originally released as the b-side to "Gloria," "My Generation" features Velvet Underground-alum John Cale, the album's producer, on bass.
Disc two of "Horses/Horses" showcases Smith and her Band--guitarist Kaye, drummer Jay Dee Daugherty, bassist Tony Shanahan and Television-guitarist Tom Verlaine--performing the complete "Horses" album live at the Royal Festival Hall in London earlier this year. The concert performance also features bassist Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers and an encore of "My Generation." The concert was the culminating show at the 2005 Meltdown Festival, which was curated by Smith.
