"Clean all the waters in the world," Dr. John [ tickets ] croons so soulfully to open "Sippiana Hericane." "Let's all lend a hand / Save our land."

Unlike some artists who never go beyond preaching about helping others, the 65-year-old vocalist/pianist both talks the talk and walks the walk. Recently, Dr. John went into the studio to record a new batch of songs for a benefit CD that will help with hurricane relief efforts in and around his native New Orleans. Proceeds from the sales of "Sippiana Hericane" will be divided equally between the New Orleans Musicians Clinic, the Jazz Foundation of America and the Voice of the Wetlands.

But this would be an album worth purchasing even if the proceeds weren't going to important causes.

Dr. John sounds strong as he opens the album with the folksy, gospel-tinged tune "Clean Water," a number New Orleans-songwriter Bobby Charles composed, and then moves directly into the gorgeous, four-part "Wade: Hurricane Suite." The singer then revisits his own "Sweet Home New Orleans," substituting new lyrics penned by his songwriting partner (and wife) Cat Yellen.

Ever the showman, Dr. John brings the album full circle in dramatic fashion with a brief reprise of "Clean Water."
