Album Review: Lee Rocker, "Racin' the Devil" (Alligator)
He doesn't get the type of press and acclaim that is heaped upon his more-famous former bandmate, Brian Setzer, but Lee Rocker isn't about to let that stop him from having a raucous rockabilly good time.
Flying mostly under the radar and attracting only die-hard rockabilly fans, the man born Lee Drucker has fashioned himself a nice little post-Stray Cats career. His latest release, "Racin' the Devil," is a fine addition to a solo catalog that already includes such worthy efforts as 1995's "Atomic Boogie Hour" and 1998's "No Cats."
The bassist certainly learned one thing during his time with the Cats--and that was how to strut. He moves with confidence and flamboyance through the album's killer opener, "The Girl From Hell," and continues to play with a peacock's poise as he delivers colorful takes on "The River Blues," "Runnin' from the Hounds" and "Rockin' Harder."
The best moment on "Racin' the Devil" comes when the 44-year-old Long Island native revisits The Stray Cats' immortal "Rock This Town" and shakes the number with the intensity of small earthquake.
