New Releases, March 14: Donald Fagen, Willie Nelson, Prince

Plus: Joe Satriani, Jackie Greene, more.

Donald Fagen
"Morph the Cat"
(Reprise)

Donald Fagen has never been the most prolific solo artist. The Steely Dan co-founder released his solo debut, "The Nightfly," in 1982 and didn't follow it up until 1993's "Kamakiriad."

Now, some 13 years later, he returns with his third solo outing, the curiously named "Morph the Cat." The album's first single is "H Gang," a carefully polished pop number that recalls "Aja"-era Steely Dan. Fagen is supporting the album with a month-long North American tour, which kicked off March 1 in New Jersey.

Willie Nelson
"You Don't Know Me: The Songs of Cindy Walker"
(Lost Highway)

Unlike Fagen, Nelson is a very prolific solo artist. Hot on the heels of the last year's likable reggae collection "Countryman," the cowboy singer releases this collection of songs penned by Cindy Walker. The CD features Nelson covering such Walker favorites as "Sugar Moon," "Cherokee Maiden," "Miss Molly," "Bubbles in My Beer" and "You Don't Know Me," which was originally made famous by Ray Charles.

Although widely acclaimed as a songwriter, Nelson is also well known as a great interpreter. In fact, his most famous collection of covers, 1978's "Stardust," remains one of the best-selling classic country albums of all time.

Prince
"Ultimate"
(Rhino)

The Purple One gets the Rhino treatment. This two-disc, 29-song compilation focuses exclusively on Prince's hit-filled stay at Warner Bros. The collection features remastered versions of such signature Prince tracks as "1999," "Purple Rain" and "When Doves Cry." There are also special dance mixes of the likes of "Little Red Corvette" and "Let's Go Crazy."

Prince is also set to release a new record on Universal, entitled "3121," on March 21. A worldwide tour in support of that album is rumored to start in May.

Joe Satriani
"Super Colossal"
(Epic)

Joe Satriani's 10th album is his first new studio outing since 2004's "Is There Love in Space?" Last year, however, he did issue a greatest-hits package "One Big Rush: The Genius of Joe Satriani" and a G3 live album "Live in Tokyo." That G3 disc featured Satriani, Steve Vai and Dream Theater's John Petrucci, who filled the place formerly held by such string wizards as Eric Johnson and Yngwie Malmsteen. Satriani will support the new album with a North American tour, which kicks off April 1 in Denver.

Jackie Greene
"American Myth"
(Verve Forecast)

Northern California-born roots-rocker Jackie Greene returns with his follow-up to 2004's acclaimed "Sweet Somewhere Bound." The singer-songwriter is accompanied by a fine batch of players for this outing, including multi-instrumentalist Steve Berlin, bassist Davey Faragher and drummer Pete Thomas (the latter two performers are longtime members of Elvis Costello's Imposters band).

Pretenders
"Pirate Radio"
(Rhino)

An absolute smorgasbord for Pretenders fans, "Pirate Radio" is an exhaustive, five-disc set that features 100 songs. The collection chronicles the band's career through such songs as "Precious" (demo version included), "Brass in Pocket" (the band's first U.S. hit) and "Hold a Candle to This" (an alternative take to the originally released song).
