Sammy Hagar serves up summer dates
Rocker and tequila mogul Sammy Hagar has rolled out the initial itinerary for his summer tour, during which he'll pull double duty by fronting his solo band, The Wabos, and a new side project, The Other Half, which also features Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony.
The road trip kicks off on the West Coast in early June and is currently scheduled to traverse the US until late July. A lone August performance is also lined up. Details are included below.
Hagar and company will warm up for the run with pair of early May three-night stands at Harrah's in Lake Tahoe, home to the stateside version of Hagar's Cabo Wabo Mexican nightclub.
Anthony and Hagar will team with Hagar's solo-band drummer, David Lauser, and guitarist, Victor Johnson, to form The Other Half. The quartet's setlist will comprise Van Halen songs.
At each stop along the summer outing, which is dubbed the "Livin' It Up" tour, organizers will set up a "Cabo Wabo village" that will be "jammed with bikini girls, body builders, mariachi bands, food, drink, contests and probably some other cool stuff to boot," according to Anthony's website.
Anthony has toured with Hagar frequently in recent years. The two last toured with Van Halen during the group's 2004 outing, which was its first with Hagar at the helm since the mid-'90s. Both have since said that guitarist Eddie Van Halen's drinking and volatile behavior derailed any potential plans that the group might have tackled following that US trek.
In a recently published interview with Japanese rock mag Burrn, Anthony--who, during Van Halen's many years without an official frontman, often was the lone spokesman who kept the band's name alive and fed the fanbase a bone by speaking optimistically about the group's future--admitted that the Van Halen brothers had sacked him prior to the 2004 reunion outing with Hagar. The bassist said he didn't play on three new Hagar-fronted VH cuts that appeared on a best-of set that the group issued to coincide with the tour, and that he had to negotiate a hired-gun contract for himself with the group's management in order to participate in the reunion.
Anthony also told the magazine that Eddie was disgruntled about sales of Hagar's Cabo Wabo tequila taking place at venues along the tour, and about Anthony's promotion of his signature hot sauce brand, Mad Anthony's Hot Sauce.
Hagar and his band have been working on a new album, which will be the singer's fifth set of all-new material since he first split with Van Halen in 1996. During the same period, Van Halen has released only one new album, which surfaced eight years ago and featured short-lived frontman Gary Cherone.
A sample of the new Hagar cut "Sam I Am" is streaming at the singer's website.
