LiveDaily Interview: Pat Monahan of Train
With lines like "I need a sign/to let me know you're here" in the song "Calling All Angels," it is easy to assume that pop-rockers Train have provided therapy for those who have lost loved ones.
While driving to Pennsylvania from Toronto, Ontario, where he was promoting Train's latest album, "For Me, It's You," lead singer Pat Monahan gets misty eyed when he recalls letters he received from fans in support of the song.
"For some reason, in the last few years, I've written a lot of songs like that--'When I Look to the Sky' and even 'Drops of Jupiter.' It seems to be our music in the last couple of years has really helped a lot of people get through some tough things. I hear about it quite often," said Monahan, whose band opened with "Calling All Angels" at the Tempe Music Festival in Tempe, AZ, April 1.
"It's kind of touching. But I'm," he said with a pause, "a cry baby. I go into a movie and it could be 'Curious George' and I'm going to cry. When I read somebody's e-mail that they took the time to write about something I did to help them, it is always moving," he added.
Train--which also includes ex-Black Crowes bassist Johnny Colt, keyboardist Brandon Bush, guitarist Jimmy Stafford and drummer Scott Underwood--is chugging along on a US tour in support of "For Me, It's You." Released to stores Jan. 31, the disc features the melancholy single "Cab." It is the band's first album of new songs since 2003's "My Private Nation," which included the Grammy-nominated No. 1 Adult Top 40/Adult Contemporary radio hit "Calling All Angels."
"For Me, It's You" was recorded during six weeks in Atlanta, GA, with producer Brendan O'Brien (Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam), who was also at the helm for 2001's double-platinum "Drops of Jupiter"--which earned the band two Grammy Awards--as well as 2003's "My Private Nation."
liveDaily: What was it like to play the Super Bowl concerts in Detroit?
Pat Monahan: It as a lot of fun because the Super Bowl was there. It was a big deal for me because I am a Steelers fan. I ended up going to the game as well. It was fantastic. I recommend to anyone who ever gets the opportunity to go to the Super Bowl to take that opportunity up.
Why the three-year break between albums?
We finished touring "My Private Nation" and I wanted to take a break from music and decided to get an apartment in Santa Monica. While I was in Santa Monica, my pursuit was of acting more than music, so I could kind of remove myself from music for a little while. It didn't work very well. By wanting to leave music temporarily, I ended up writing more than ever, and I think better than ever. After a year of writing, we decided that it's time to go in and make a record and that's what we did.
When did you record "For Me, It's You"?
June 2005. It took six weeks. Once you're prepared, making a record can go very fast.
Tell me about Train's songwriting process.
I write all the lyrics and the melodies, and basically what I do with the band [is] I write what I do and they write what they do. But it comes in a lot of different ways. Sometimes, I'll have a melody and a lyric idea, and we'll build a song around it. Other times, there are songs that are basically laid out in song form and I'll just write lyrics. Sometimes, we'll all get into a room with absolutely no agenda and no ideas and we'll write a song. There's really no formula and anything goes.
What is your favorite song on "For Me, It's You"?
It varies. It's just different all the time. "For Me, It's You" is kind of my overall favorite. I really love playing "Am I Reaching You Now?" I originally didn't want it to make the record. Now I'm just in love with it. Sometimes it's "Skyscraper." It's always different.
What was it about "Am I Reaching You Now?" that you didn't like?
I don't know. I was just having a tough time with it in the beginning. It's this really cool rock song but, I don't know, I didn't think my performance was very good. You get caught up in itty bitty things that shouldn't matter.
Would you say that "For Me, It's You" is a little darker than your previous efforts?
Darker? It depends on what you mean by darker.
I mean it deals a lot more with break-ups and estranged relationships.
Yeah, maybe.
Is it tough to write and sing about situations like that?
So far, it's not. I try to be personal and sincere in all that I do, not just music. Being able to perform these songs is really healing for me. Going through tough times is necessary. It's a necessary thing to get to that other side. I've turned every negative aspect in my life into something much more positive than I ever dreamed.
That's really admirable.
It's a huge accomplishment. I'm very proud of it. Somehow, I'm doing it and I don't want to question it. I just love the fact that I'm able to make it happen right now. I'm just happier and more fulfilled than I've ever been in my life and things just keep getting better.
What can people expect from your live shows? You've become sort of known for your covers.
Our live shows are going to be much better now. We really put a lot of work into this new show and we're all so excited about it. We plan on touring for as long as we can. It's just exciting. We're going to mix it up and do covers and we have a whole new record to play. We'll still play old songs and deeper tracks on the albums. But, visually, it's a much more exciting show.
