Live Review: Kid Rock in Phoenix
Kid Rock , like country stars Alan Jackson and Kenny Chesney, subscribes to the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" theory of performing.
While the aforementioned acts may repeat the same show highlights, it doesn't mean they are any less entertaining. In Kid Rock's case, he shows off his musical chops by rotating among the instruments, and has women scream "Kid" and the men "Rock" during "What's My Name." At the end of the show, he bows down as one of his cronies covers him with a fur, pimp-like coat (the same move Eminem mocks in D12's "My Band" video).
Rock used the same old shtick at his show Saturday (4/23) at Phoenix's Cricket Pavilion, but fans ate it up, even predicting which gag was coming next. Rock, born Robert Ritchie, is on the road behind his concert CD "Live Trucker."
The two-hour show kicked off with DJ Paradime introducing the Twisted Brown Trucker members as the band played the intro to "Bawidaba." Wearing a black-and-white pimp coat emblazoned with "Cowboy" on the back, Rock arrived by rising from beneath the stage to the "Shaft" theme song.
Rock, who reportedly travels with a preacher to keep him focused on performing, introduced "You Never Met a Motherf----- Quite Like Me" with a story about greeting St. Peter at heaven's gate. He even poked fun at the a sex tape involving him and ex-Creed frontman Scott Stapp that recently surfaced.
He said he would arrive at St. Peter's gate in a 1959 drop-top Cadillac, meeting up with late Twisted Brown Trucker member Joe C. When St. Peter asks why he should be let in to heaven, Rock screamed, "Because you never met a motherf----- quite like me."
A video screen accompanied Rock's performance, often paying homage to his heroes or musicians who have passed away. "American Bad Ass" began with a clip of Clint Eastwood saying "Go ahead, make my day." He utilized his video screen to show off other "American Bad Asses" such as members of the Detroit Red Wings, Hank Williams Jr., Tina Turner, military troops, Willie Nelson and--to the crowd's enjoyment--Dale Earnhardt. It ended with a picture of Johnny Cash flipping the bird.
Ironically, after dogging former DJ Uncle Kracker during a recent interview with LiveDaily, Rock covered "Drift Away," the song that put Kracker on the map. He dedicated it to fallen musicians, ranging from Bob Marley and Hank Williams to Dimebag Darrell and D12's Proof.
While "Drift Away" wasn't exactly a stellar showcase for Rock's vocals, "Only God Knows Why" featured an experiment gone awry. He used a special effects microphone to sing most of the song before chucking the piece to the side of the stage to resume singing the song normally.
Musically, he also honored his favorites. During "Never Met a …" he broke into "Freebird," and "Devil Without a Cause" segued into "Back in Black."
In a surprising move, Rock's longtime guitarist Kenny Olson, who appears on the Grammy-winning album "Les Paul and Friends," did not appear with the Twisted Brown Trucker Band. Instead, he was replaced ably by talented underground Detroit singer/songwriter/guitarist Kenny Tudrick. (Olson's New Jersey-based manager said the guitarist has moved on to play with his own band The Flask.) Rock's back-up singers were absent as well, however, the band was tighter than ever.
