'Rock Star: Supernova' tour set, singer pending
The winner of the CBS-TV talent-search series "Rock Star: Supernova" will get his or her introduction to big stages during a 27-city tour of the North American arena and theater circuit that opens in Las Vegas on New Year's Eve.
The winning singer--who will front a new band dubbed Supernova that also includes drummer Tommy Lee (Motley Crue), bassist Jason Newsted (ex-Metallica) and guitarist Gilby Clarke (ex-Guns N' Roses)--will have beaten out 15 aspiring rockers vying for the job via the TV show. Of the 15, only six contenders remain: Lukas Rossi, Magni, Patrice Pike, Ryan Star, Dilana, Storm Large and Toby Rand.
In addition to fronting Supernova on tour, the winning vocalist willl also record a new album with the group. The Butch Walker-produced set is due in stores Nov. 21.
"Rock Star: Supernova" marks the second season of the "Rock Star" series. During the first season, J.D. Fortune was selected as the new lead singer for INXS. He recorded a new album with the band, and toured with the group behind the set.
The name "Supernova" is causing some headaches for producer Mark Burnett, CBS, and others, who have been hit with a lawsuit by a Costa Mesa, CA-based band that has been using the monikerfor more than 15 years. That group--which has a song titled "Chewbacca" on the "Clerks" soundtrack, has released three albums and continues to tour--requested a preliminary injunction earlier this month to prevent the use of the name "Supernova" on the TV series. The move reportedly came after negotiations with the producer and network broke down.
[Editor's note: This story was edited on 8/23 to include Dilana as contending lead singer.]
