Aerosmith Pulls Out Of Club Business

Aerosmith has pulled their backing from the Boston club Mama Kin and sold their interests to the club's co-owners the Lyons Group. The club has been re-named the Landsdowne Street Music Hall, retiring the Mama Kin name which was borrowed from a song title on Aerosmith's 1973 debut album. The Lyons Group owns several other clubs on Landsdowne Street.

''We're sorry to do this, but we had a good run,'' Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry told the Boston Globe on Monday (1/4). The band's co-ownership in the club was initially envisioned as creating a showcase for local acts, but the Lyons Group, which controlled the booking for the venue, established a policy of booking national touring acts to keep the club's head above water. In doing so, the club mirrored the booking efforts of other Landsdowne Street clubs.

Perry acknowledged that Aerosmith's vision for the club faded in part due to the band's busy schedule, which made it impossible for them to participate in many decisions. The band also came into the effort with no experience in operating a live music venue. ''It's hard to tell the Lyons [group] how to run a club,'' Perry told the Globe. ''It's like them telling me how to make a record.''

Aerosmith members Joe Perry and Steven Tyler are partners in a South Shore restaurant, Mount Blue.
